An ex-employee of Amazon has taken to Medium to post her side of the story. Hired by Amazon in 2011 to help launch its New York City-based book publishing outpost, Julia Cheiffetz, was diagnosed with cancer in six weeks after she gave birth.
After a five-month maternity leave,
Cheiffetz was welcomed by a woman who had replaced her while she was put
on a performance improvement plan, or PIP.

Post her surgery she received a form letter saying that
the health insurance provided by her employer had been terminated. She
was told that the whole thing was a glitch in the system. She then had
to switch to her husband’s insurance to cover her medical expenses. After a five-month maternity leave, Cheiffetz was welcomed by a woman who had replaced her while she was put on a performance improvement plan, or PIP, that basically meant her employment was at risk. Soon, she quit the company.
Cheiffetz has directed her questions at Amazon saying it can’t claim to be a data-driven company if it can’t gauge how many women apply and how many actually stay on as employees.
Earlier this month, a New York Times article created furor for exposing the extremely competitive, almost to the extent of being brutal, work culture Amazon allegedly offers its employees.
